PHARMACY TECHNICIAN Bow Valley College The Pharmacy Technician Diploma program offered by Bow Valley College on a part-time basis over three years is designed for people who have an interest in health care, a caring attitude and an aptitude in chemistry and excellent communication skills. Pharmacy technicians work under the supervision of a pharmacist in community and hospital pharmacies dispensing, compounding and packaging prescriptions medication and preparing sterile products. Technicians also perform activities such as managing inventory, communicating with patients, answering telephones and accepting payment for products and professional services. This program combines theory with practical application of knowledge and skills and graduates will be eligible for national registration and licensure. The program will involve a combination of delivery modes including audio/video conferencing sessions, Blackboard discussion, independent study using print based materials, and on site instruction with an instructor at your nearest Consortium location. The Bridge Program is one full academic term (16 weeks) offered part-time, online with face-to-face workshops for the nursing lab components and a clinical practicum in each semester. At the successful completion of the bridging program, learners can go directly into semester III of Bow Valley College's Practical Nurse Program - choosing either a full-time or part-time route (above). The program will start January 4, 2009 with successful students ready to join the Practical Nurse Program in the Chinook Educational Consortium region for Semesters III and IV with a start date of September 1, 2009 and end date of June 18, 2010. EMERGENCY MEDICAL RESPONDER Southern Alberta Institute of Technology The EMR program offered by SAIT provides the necessary skills and knowledge for an entry-level emergency care provider and is a prerequisite for being selected into the EMT Program and in turn to the EMT-Paramedic Program. The program includes pre-hospital treatment for various medical and traumatic injuries as well as a system approach to patient and scene assessment, basic anatomy, EMR-level treatment protocols, and written and verbal communication skills. EMR training is viewed as valuable in industrial and workplace settings, volunteer firefighting and for community groups. The program will be offered through home study, computer managed learning and 7 on-site, class days and a final lab evaluation in either Pincher Creek or Claresholm, depending on the program you are enrolled in. Students receive a SAIT Certificate of Achievement and are eligible to write the Alberta College of Paramedics Provincial EMR Registration exam. EDUCATION ASSISTANT CERTIFICATE/ BEHAVIOUR SUPPORT DIPLOMA PROGRAM Bow Valley College Bow Valley College offers part-time Education Assistant Certificate and Behavior Support Diploma Programs. The Certificate can be completed in 2 years and the Diploma in 4 years. The Education Assistant Program prepares you to work in an educational setting with teachers and other professionals supporting children with diverse learning needs. Through the integration of theory and practice you will develop knowledge and skills to work with children and adolescents who have a range of exceptionalities. The Education Assistant works with students in inclusive and specialized settings supporting their cognitive, psychological, and social development. The Behavior Support Diploma Program is the second year of the diploma and is designed to build on the knowledge and skills developed in the Education Assistant Certificate Program and/or related certificate/diploma programs, providing a program in the second year that focuses on the development of knowledge and skills to work with children and youth with behavioral challenges. Behavior support workers or practitioners generally act as members of a multidisciplinary team under the supervision of a teacher or other professional in educational settings. They provide services such as curriculum support, instruction, and behavior program implementation for students experiencing various learning issues -- medical, psychological/psychiatric and social challenges. Occasional face-to-face sessions will be held at a central Consortium site. Practicum experiences are scheduled throughout the program. Students may utilize their existing work place (if it qualifies) to complete the practicum, where appropriate. The Early Learning and Child Care Diploma Program is designed to prepare graduates to work in child care settings with young children and families. The program combines theory in child development, programming and communications, with practical application of knowledge and skills. Students may exit the program after meeting the first year requirements with a certificate. Selected courses in the first and second year of the Diploma program will be offered in each of the fall, winter and spring terms.
