“ From Sketch to Watercolour”
Drawing/Painting with Watercolour
Larry Cromwell
Sketching in pencil and painting in transparent watercolour with Larry
Cromwell on location in the Crowsnest Pass, September 11 and 12, 2010.
This weekend is designed for those with some basic watercolour
experience as well as the more practiced. Beginners are welcome as you
can certainly profit from the experience of others.
For something a bit different, the workshop will take the participants
through the process of sketching with pencil one’s initial observations
and ideas prior to painting, giving some thought to what we intend to do
before we actually “engage the clutch”. Introducing the notion of giving
thought to the process of making art and to the transparent use of the
watercolour media.
About the Instructor
Larry is Professor Emeritus Art, University of Calgary, having retired
the end of 1999 after nearly 30 years teaching in the Department of Art.
In addition, Larry is a long standing member of the Alberta Society of
Artists, Past President and long serving Provincial Council member. As
your instructor he will share his expertise and enthusiasm for
watercolour based upon his long and successful tenure as both artist and
teacher. Guided by traditional values in the technique of transparent
watercolour and long association with the natural environment he
continues to create his own work and to share with his students.
Currently, Larry and his wife are nearly finished building a studio and
residence near the Crowsnest River to be nearer to what he loves.
Larry successfully maintains his reputation as a practicing and
exhibiting artist; his work continues to be widely exhibited in
contemporary juried exhibitions and is included in a growing list of
private and corporate collections in both Canada and the USA.

The Creative Process –
Painting Workshop -All materials/All skill levels
Barbara Amos
We will be exploring the ideas of multiples in this workshop. Frequently
an idea is worth developing in more than one way. Pattern, shifts in
colour or composition can highlight a creative sequence. Whether we work
with abstraction or realism, spontaneously or methodically, we benefit
from understanding and identifying the pathways into our creativity.
There will be various short drawings & paintings designed to open up the
creative process. A larger finished work can be developed over the
weekend, or a series of smaller related panels could also be considered.
All skill levels welcome.
SUGGESTED MATERIALS: All materials are
welcome, however acrylics are the most versatile and if you are
purchasing materials for this course, below is a list of recommended
materials;
6 9x12 canvas or canvas boards or similar
OR one canvas 30x24 inches or similar (best option for oil painters)
OR 2 18x24 canvases
Watercolourists will want one full sheet 22x30 stretched on a board, and
a palette with many wells
Some paper/canvas for experimentation
Vine Charcoal (very soft, lighter mark in round sticks, sometimes called
willow charcoal)
8 oz acrylic gel or gloss medium (there’s a variety of these, any one
will be fine)
An assortment of colours: the following is a double primary palette,
from which all colours can be mixed:
Titanium white; Mars or Carbon black; Ultramarine blue; Cerulean Blue or
Cobalt or similar
Napthol red or Quinacridone red (cool reds); Cad red light or Vermillion
